While Sam is sitting on his bed in his private room, players can move the camera around and zoom in on different parts of his body. For example, if players repeatedly zoom in on Sam’s crotch, he will get annoyed with them and eventually punch the camera. Similarly, there’s an easter egg if Death Stranding players zoom in on Sam’s feet.

By zooming in on Sam’s feet in Death Stranding, players can trigger a cut-scene where black tar bubbles up from the ground and a humanoid creature grabs Sam’s ankles. This creature looks like the black tar people that attempt to pull Sam in the ground when players trigger BTs in the game, though this one has a more defined face and glasses. There is a bit of a dispute online as to who this person is supposed to represent, but fans can check it out for themselves and decide.
Right now, there are two main theories as to the identity of this black tar person. Many people seem to think that this is Death Stranding director Hideo Kojima making a cameo, which would be far from the first time that the famed game director has appeared in his own games. Others think it is supposed to be Guillermo del Toro’s character Deadman.
While fans continue to argue about the black tar person’s identity, Death Stranding players should keep an eye out for more interesting easter eggs hidden in the game. Quite a few have been found so far, including Horizon Zero Dawn holograms that players can collect. Some of them are definitely more hidden than others, though, so it may be some time before players find them all.
Death Stranding is out now for PS4 with a PC release to follow in the summer of 2020.
