Speaking to the French site Premiere regarding his latest film, Mikkelsen was asked about his work on Death Stranding and how it compared to working on films. In a surprising answer, Mikkelsen admitted that his background in dance was a major help during the motion capture. Having 10 years of ballet experience allowed him to find and utilize the appropriate movements based on the scene. Unfortunately, he didn’t elaborate further, but clearly, his experience in dance helped in the motion capture process.
Mikkelsen went on to reveal that working with Kojima on the game has been a unique experience. While the process if fairly different when compared to traditional cinema, the one common aspect between the two is being able to breathe emotions and life into the characters being portrayed. Interestingly enough, it would seem that Mikkelsen’s character is a complex one as in one of the more recent trailers it appears he’s somewhat antagonistic, leading a covert military group against Guillermo del Toro’s character. However, Kojima may be using a bit of misdirection as Mikkelsen has previously stated that his character is not actually the game’s villain.
Initially revealed two years ago at E3, Death Stranding features a star-studded cast featuring the likes of Mikkelsen and del Toro as well as Walking Dead star Norman Reedus. Fans are well aware that the game also features a female lead, a role which both Sony and Kojima has been pretty secretive about. Earlier this year, rumors began to swirl about who may be filling that role, with popular YouTube YongYea citing evidence that Diane Kruger is likely portraying that unannounced character. With Death Stranding set to be a featured game at Sony’s show this year, answers are likely right around the corner.
Death Stranding is currently in development for PlayStation 4.
