Deathloop was first announced in 2019 as the next big game from Arkane Lyon, the studio behind the beloved Dishonored series. While there were only a few details announced, in 2020 it was revealed that the game would be a timed PlayStation 5 exclusive, meaning it would only be available on that console for at least one year. It then came as a shock when, in September 2020, Microsoft announced that it would be acquiring ZeniMax Media and its subsidiaries, including Arkane Studios and Bethesda. Later, Microsoft confirmed that it would honor timed exclusivity agreements with Sony, which included keeping Deathloop and Tango GameWorks’ Ghostwire: Tokyo as timed PS5 console exclusives.

Given that Deathloop released on PlayStation 5 and PC on September 14, 2021, it’s not much of a surprise that Microsoft revealed exactly one year later that Deathloop is set to release on Xbox Series X/S as part of Xbox Game Pass on September 20, 2022. This comes after a Deathloop advertisement appeared on the Xbox Dashboard. Better yet, Deathloop will launch on Xbox platforms with a new free ‘Golden Loop’ update, which will add new enemies, weapons, upgrades, an extended ending, and more. This update will also be available on PC and PS5.
Many fans have wondered why Microsoft waited so long to confirm when Deathloop would come to Xbox Series X/S, but given that the game’s one-year anniversary was on September 14, the answer seems pretty clear. Sony’s contract with Bethesda and Arkane likely prohibited Microsoft from advertising the game until after the exclusivity window had ended. This is supported by the fact that videos with Deathloop’s director, Dinga Bakaba, on Xbox’s YouTube channel have had posters of the game in the background blurred out.
The confirmation of Deathloop’s release date for Xbox Game Pass also gives fans an idea of when Ghostwire: Tokyo may join Xbox Game Pass, given that the two titles both had timed PS5 console exclusivity. Since Ghostwire: Tokyo launched on March 25, 2022, it’s safe to assume it will come to Xbox and perhaps Game Pass sometime after March 26, 2023.
Deathloop is available now on PC and PS5, and it will release for Xbox Series X/S on September 20, 2022.
