How To Play Wordle
Wordle is a short and sweet game that’s all about guessing mystery words. Once a day, players can log on and try their hand against the five-letter mystery word curated by the New York Times Games. But in order to play, word puzzle fans will need to learn the rules first.

As a quick note: there are loads of Wordle clones and copycats out there. The original and the one this article is all about is the New York Times Games version. It can only be found on the NYT Games site and the NYT Crossword app. Other versions will most likely have different answers and may even have slightly different rules of how to play. For example, there is a Wordle clone all about guessing dog breeds, one all about Fortnite, and versions with more than five letters.
In order to start, choose a good starting Wordle word. It should be five letters long, a real English word, and have a good distribution of common letters. Type this starting word into the website. Press enter. The letters of the word will change colors. Green letters are right and in the right place in the word. Yellow letters are right but in the wrong place in the word. Gray letters are incorrect. Given these clues, players must keep trying new words and getting new color-coded clues. Players have a total of six guesses to get to the word before they lose. Puzzles reset daily at 12:00AM local time.
