First, players need to make sure they are in the right spot. The original version of Wordle is available on the New York Times Crossword app and the New York Times Games website. This is the version this article is all about, and other versions will have different answers and can have different rules. Here’s how to play:
Choose a good starting Wordle word; great starting words have five different letters that are common, and are real English words. Wordle answers cannot be previous answers or plural nouns ending in S or ES, but these words can be used as guesses. Choose a good word that fits into these parameters. Type the word into the site or app and press enter. The letters will change colors: green letters are right, gray are wrong, and yellow letters are right but in the wrong place(s) in the word. Given these clues, try a new word and get new color-coded clues. Players have a total of six tries to get to the answer of the day. Puzzles reset daily at midnight at the player’s local time.
