First, players should head to the New York Times Wordle site or the New York Times Crossword app. These are the only two places to play the original version of Wordle, which is what this article is about. Other versions will have different answers and could have different rules. Next, players should choose a good starting word. This word:

Must be five letters. Must be a real word. Cannot be a proper noun. Cannot be one of the offensive words censored from Wordle by the New York Times. Cannot be a plural noun ending in S or ES. Should not be a previous answer. Should have a variety of common letters in it.

Type the chosen word into the site and press enter. The letters will change colors.

Green letters are right. Gray letters are wrong. Yellow letters are right but in the wrong place in the word.

Given these clues, players need to try up to five more times with new words, getting new clues that hopefully get them closer to the answer. There is only one puzzle a day, and the new one comes around at midnight.
