First, players will want to make sure they are playing the correct version. Wordle has a versatile set of rules that makes it easy to create niche clones of, and many developers out in the world did just that. There are a massive amount of Wordle-like games out there, from Pokemon-themed ones to versions with different word sizes to direct clones. The original, and the subject of this article, is the New York Times Games version; the newspaper giant purchased it in February 2022, and it still is hosted there now. Here’s how to play this version:
Choose a starting word. This word must be five letters, a real word, not a proper noun, and cannot be an offensive word like a slur. A good starting word has a bunch of common letters in it, and it is not a previous puzzle word or a plural noun ending in S or ES. Once a good starting word is chosen, type it into the site or the New York Times Crossword app, where Wordle can also be played. The letters of the chosen word will change color: green for correct letters, gray for incorrect letters, and yellow for letters that are right but in the wrong place in the word. Type another word with these clues in mind, and get more clues with the colors of its letters. Players have a total of six tries to get to the word of the day before they lose. Puzzle reset daily at midnight local time, meaning there is only one puzzle per day for everyone. This is another reason why there are so many Wordle clones out there; some players wanted more Wordle to scratch their word puzzle itch.
