Wordle is a daily game that pits players against a mystery five-letter word without any starting hints. While it may sound easy, this game can be incredibly challenging to master. In order to get started playing this viral not-so-easy game, players will first need a good foundation of the rules and strategies for Wordle.

First, choose a great starting word. This word:
Must be five letters long. Must be a real word that’s not a proper noun. Must not be one of the offensive Wordle words removed by the New York Times. Should contain five different, common letters. Should not be a previous Wordle answer. Should not be a plural noun ending in S or ES.
Once a good word is chosen, type it into the New York Times Games Wordle site or the New York Times Crossword app. The letters of the chosen word will then change colors, giving hints to the answer.
Green letters are correct and in the right place or places in the word. Yellow letters are correct but in the wrong position or positions in the word. Gray letters are incorrect and won’t be in the answer today.
Given these clues, try another word and get more clues until players either guess the answer or run out of their six total tries. Puzzles reset at midnight local time every day, meaning there is only one word for everyone every day.
