In Elden Ring this delicate system for collecting runes, which are required to level up, does add an element of risk vs reward to the game. Carrying around a large number of runes will let players continue playing, with a bigger pay-out for when they do finally decide to stop and level up. But the risk increases exponentially as dying would mean the loss of an even greater amount of time.

Elden Ring fans are divided over carrying around a large number of runes. Many players like to level up as soon as they’re able, while others claim to have gained staggering amounts of runes from random Elden Ring PvP players. Most players will only have more runes than they need to level up if they are farming. By knowing the right places to farm, and dedicating some time to it, an unbelievable amount of runes can be acquired. Reddit user KaleTheVeggies has shared an image of the number of runes they racked up after a marathon farming session.
Gaining a staggering 58 million runes, the Reddit user was able to go from level 188 to level 300 when they had finally stopped to spend their hard-won runes. Elden Ring’s level-up costs start off quite easy to meet, but the rune requirement increases with every level. It would take farming this many runes 17 times before the Elden Ring level cap could be reached, and the number of levels gained each time would diminish.
Elden Ring is not a game that requires maxing out any levels, however. The game can usually be beaten when the player is around level 120, as the player only needs to level up the stats that benefit their play style. Since every stat in the game can be leveled to 99, the max level overall is 713. This is also long past when leveling up in Elden Ring reaches a point of diminishing returns.
Progress into higher NG+ playthroughs and Elden Ring begins to get relentlessly hard. This is coupled with the fact that the rune requirements to level up will now cost hundreds of thousands of runes per level. But a for a player only in NG+2, 58 million runes could be seen as overkill as it would make that whole playthrough considerably easier.
Elden Ring is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
