Some of these backstories feature some deep lore and huge bits of setup, and it will be interesting to see what pieces of the story Blizzard chooses to address in the sequel. While it is highly unlikely that Overwatch 2 will address every plot thread that has been left dangling in the past, many could be addressed. As such, while fans can expect to see some major moments like Hanzo’s next meeting with Genji, there are some slightly more obscure pieces of the narrative than could also find themselves at the forefront of the sequel. As such, here are some of the deeper cuts Overwatch 2 fans might see addressed.

Junkrat’s Treasure

It is entirely possible that the treasure held by the hero Junkrat is never revealed, with the prized possession continuing to be used as a MacGuffin like Pulp Fiction’s briefcase. At the same time, it is a big part of Junkrat’s story, with the treasure also teased in the Junkertown map and several comics. What this treasure could be is anyone’s guess, as it has never been described in a meaningful way. While this could always be played off as a joke if it is revealed, high-profile characters like the Junker Queen have shown interest in this loot. In turn, Junkrat’s treasure could be the key to solving some larger mysteries — meaning it has the potential to play a role in the sequel.

Mercy And Genji’s Relationship

One of the most lighthearted bits of lore in the Overwatch universe is the budding romance between Genji and Mercy. Responsible for saving Genji’s life after Hanzo’s attempted murder, Mercy and Genji’s dialogue has hinted that there is more going on between them than a professional relationship. Dialogue has referred to Mercy and Genji exchanging chocolates, with the comics even showing Genji writing letters to Mercy during his trip to Zenyatta’s temple. With Genji and Mercy set to interact in the sequel, their romance could be made clearer than ever, something that would surely satisfy any longtime fans of Overwatch.

Sombra’s Conspiracy

One of the biggest chapters Overwatch 2 could close is Sombra’s conspiracy. The entire focus of her backstory and complex motivations, Sombra is trying to learn more about The Iris. Having ties to seemingly every hero and villain throughout the Overwatch universe, Sombra is determined to find out who or what this figure is. A possible villain or organization outside of Talon and Null Sector, whatever The Iris is could be the next antagonist for the Overwatch story. Clearly important, Sombra has shown that she is willing to use Talon and manipulate government leaders just to find out what is truly happening behind the scenes. As such, it would be great to find out more about why Sombra is so obsessed and what exactly her conspiracy is building to.

The Vishkar Corporation And Lucio

With both Rio De Janeiro and Lucio shown to have a big focus in the sequel’s narrative, a mention of the country’s history with Vishkar seems unavoidable. The hardlight company that Symmetra works for came into Rio with the promise of rebuilding the area after the Omnic Crisis. However, this apparent goodwill turned out to be an act of deception, with the company taking full control of the country. Enforcing unfair curfews, punishing civilians for what they saw as unlawful acts, and exploiting the population to get some cheap labor, the company proved to be truly awful. As a result, a young Lucio stole Vishkar technology to make his iconic Sonic Amplifier weapon.

Lucio then went on to rally the people of Rio in an uprising against the Vishkar Corporation, with the civilian army eventually succeeding in overthrowing the corrupt company. From there, the young DJ became famous, with his music taking off and making him an international superstar. This bit of lore could be used in several ways, with one option seeing Lucio criticize Overwatch for not helping with the rebuild after the Omnic Crisis. Another plot point could see Vishkar attempting to take over Rio again after the latest Omnic attack, which could lead to an encounter between Lucio or Symmetra. Vishkar could even partner with Talon, leading Lucio to join Overwatch to help combat his former adversaries. With overthrowing Vishkar being a huge portion of Lucio’s arc, and Rio being a large play space in the sequel, this bit of lesser-known lore should prove important.
